Groups Want to Secede from United States

Political groups from New England and the South are joining forces to discuss how to go about legally seceding from the United States. The Middlebury Institute, based in Cold Spring, N.Y is meeting with The League of the South in a two day convention targeting how to peacefully, and legally, secede from the union. The convention begins October 3rd in Chattanooga, TN.

These two groups share very little in political opinions but both believe they should be able to secede from the United States. In fact, the Southern Poverty Law Center considers the League of the South to be a racist, white supremacist organization.

Thomas Naylor, a former Duke University Professor and the founder of a group named the Second Vermont Republic, believes that the future of the United States is "grim." He states that more than 25 states currently have organizations in favor of secession. And, he believes the numbers are growing for these groups. The Second Vermont Republic is in favor of secession.

secession movements

As a Southerner who is not exactly enamored of the idea of a North American Union, I checked out the League of the South to see if their ideals and goals fit mine. Unfortunately, I was met with the Confederate battle flag and "Dixie". Now, these folks are justifiably proud of their Southern heritage and are free to celebrate it as they wish. My contention is that, as long as they choose to use such emotionally charged symbols, they will not be taken seriously, regardless of how sound their purpose and goals. I fly a Confederate flag - but the 1st national flag, because I believe in states' rights. Should I find a serious group that is looking forward, not backwards, I would be very interested in lending my support to same. I'm not going to Vermont - too darn cold!
