The WWE No Mercy pay per view event was highlighted by no fewer than three WWE Championship matches. After John Cena lost his title due to a shoulder injury, the WWE Championship was open to anyone. However, Vince McMahon shocked everyone at the beginning of No Mercy by announcing that Randy Orton would be the new WWE Champion.
Handing Orton the title without forcing him to fight for it was a huge surprise for the WWE fans at No Mercy. However, a bigger surprise was in store. Immediately after the announcement, the mighty Triple H challenged Randy Orton to an immediate championship match. Orton and McMahon were both shocked by the challenge but were forced to agree to the match.
Orton and Triple H battled hard in the championship title match. Orton was trying to hold on to his first WWE Championship since 2004. Ironically, it was Triple H who stripped the title in 2004 and he was trying to do it again. Triple H was searching for his 11th WWE Championship and he was successful. The Game managed to defeat Randy Orton in the title match and once again became the WWE Champion.
However, Vince McMahon was furious about this turn of events. McMahon and Triple H have a long history of hatred for one another. McMahon decided to get some revenge on Triple H by making The Game's match against Umaga and title bout. Triple H was furious but he was backed in a corner. He had to battle Umaga immediately after facing, and defeating, Orton.
Umaga entered the ring and gave Triple H the fight of his life. The Game was already bruised and tired from his first match with Orton. Now he had to face the giant Umaga to defend his title. Triple H came through in true Triple H fashion. He battled the massive Umaga and successfully defeated him to retain the WWE Championship title.
But, it wasn't over yet. Orton, seeing that Triple H was exhausted from the two matches, decided to challenge Triple H to a rematch. Since Orton was a former WWE Champion he had the option to challenge the current champion to a rematch. Orton did just that and McMahon forced the match to happen in the same night. Triple H once again had to step back into the ring to defend his new title.
Three championship matches was more than The Game could handle. After two battles with Orton and Umaga, Triple H was completely spent and injured. His body exhausted, he fought bravely against Orton but could not manage to defend his title a third time. Orton, who had 2 hours of rest after the first match, was able to defeat Triple H and regain the WWE Championship title that he held just hours earlier.
