You have probably read the news from a few months ago when Isaiah Washington used an anit-gay slur when referring to Grey's Anatomy co-star T.R. Knight. T.R. Knight, who is admittedly gay, plays an up and coming doctor on the hit show. After much controversy regarding Isaiah Washington's use of the slur, he then repeated the slur in a backstage interview at the Golden Globes. This resulted in Washington issuing a public apology to T.R. Knight and others.
Now, ABC has fired Isaiah Washington from the cast of Grey's Anatomy and he is not happy about it. But, what seems to be angering everyone else is that he is trying to turn the tables by using the race card. Washington claims that racism was a factor in his firing. Washington states, "My mistake was believing that I would get the support from my network and all of my cast mates across the board. My mistake was believing I could correct a wrong with honesty and sincerity," in an interview with Newsweek. He also states that his "mistake was thinking black people get second chances. I was wrong on all fronts."
Is this another example of a Hollywood celebrity not taking responsibility for their actions? After Paris Hilton's statement that her imprisonment was unwarranted (see Paris on Larry King for more on this story), it seems that more and more celebrities would like to blame their circumstances on everything else but themselves.
Another factor here is that, not only is he not accepting the consequences of his actions, but he is blaming racism for his situation. Some have a major problem with this. Racism is a very serious situation and should not be used as a defense whenever a minority needs an excuse. It takes away from those who are truly facing racism in their lives and jobs.
