Is Alabama Football Involved in Hoover High School Academic Controversy?

Hoover High School, which gained national recognition as the center of MTV's "Two-A-Days", is now getting recognition for a much more negative situation involving the football program and academics. Now, there are some indications that the University of Alabama may somehow be involved. Either as an innocent bystander of an unfortunate situation, or as a hooded figure making deals in dark alleys, may take time to investigate. But, it appears that some investigations may be underway or may be coming in the near future.

Trouble first surfaced when allegations were made that grades had been changed for two senior football players at Hoover High School without the approval of their respective teacher. Internet sites and sports talk radio have alleged that a non-tenured teacher was fired for refusing to change one of the grades. And, it appears that the grade was still changed after the teacher was dismissed. It has recently come to light that the two student athletes involved in the controversy both signed letters of intent to play football at the University of Alabama. Josh Chapman, one of the players whose grades are in question, is currently enrolled at the University of Alabama and is playing defensive tackle. The grade change was necessary for Chapman to gain eligibility to attend the university.

Alabama football is no stranger to NCAA investigations. The football program just recently came off of NCAA probation due to booster involvement in paying for high school recruits. At this time, Alabama has made no comment on whether or not they attend to review Chapman's eligibility. What is striking at this time, is that both Hoover High School and the University of Alabama know, without doubt, that the transcripts used to gain eligibility for Chapman, contain an incorrect grade. Yet, he is still enrolled. The NCAA refuses to comment on specific cases, but, as a general rule, will review a player's academics when issues arise. It is likely that an investigation would follow if evidence of fraud was found.
